Case Study – FDIC Loan Analysis School Curriculum
Challenge
To create a substantive revision of the curriculum for the FDIC’s Loan Analysis School—a two-week instructor-led course offered through the FDIC Corporate University. The purpose of the Loan Analysis School is to prepare pre-commissioned bank examiners to assess the credit quality of a bank’s commercial loan portfolio as part of the risk examination process.
Response
We worked with the FDIC Corporate University instructional design team and subject matter experts from the FDIC Division of Risk Management Supervision to
- Create a detailed two-week syllabus
- Create content outlines for each of the modules within the curriculum
- Develop detailed interactive lecture notes and multimedia support for instructors
- Design skill-building activities to engage learners and reinforce learning
- Create a comprehensive case study to give learners the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills in a real-world situation
Result
A comprehensive two-week curriculum that provides bank examiners with the knowledge and skills they need to review and classify individual commercial loans. Specifically, the curriculum prepares bank examiners to
- Analyze financial statements and cash flows
- Evaluate commercial loan structure, pricing, and documentation
- Make classification decisions and document them appropriately
- Communicate classification decisions to bank senior management

Case Study – FDIC New Director Video Education Series
Challenge
To create educational videos for delivery via the FDIC YouTube Channel that would help prepare new community bank directors to fulfill their important fiduciary role and to be fully engaged when their bank is undergoing an FDIC risk management, compliance, or Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) examination.
Response
We worked with the FDIC Corporate University instructional design team and subject matter experts from FDIC Division of Depositor and Consumer Protection to
- Identify the content to be addressed in each video
- Conceptualize how the content should be presented to engage, entertain, and educate the viewer
- Write and test video scripts
Result
Scripts for a series of educational videos that provide new bank directors with information that enables them to fulfill their responsibilities as community bank directors and participate fully in the bank examination process. Scripts address topics including:
- Role and responsibilities of bank directors
- Risk management examination process
- Compliance examination process
- Community Reinvestment Act examination process

Case Study – FDIC Introduction to Examinations School Securities Module
Challenge
To design a new one-day Securities Module to be included in the FDIC’s two-week instructor-led Introduction to Examinations School offered through the FDIC Corporate University. The purpose of the Securities module is to provide pre-commissioned bank examiners with a broad-based introduction to the factors that need to be considered when assessing a bank’s investment risk management program and evaluating a bank’s investment portfolio.

We worked with the FDIC Corporate University instructional design team and subject matter experts from FDIC Division of Risk Management Supervision to
- Create a detailed syllabus and content outlines for each section of the Securities Module
- Develop detailed interactive lecture notes and multimedia support for instructors
- Design skill-building activities to engage learners and reinforce learning
Result
A one-day instructor-led course that provides bank examiners with the knowledge and skills they need to assess the adequacy of a bank’s investment risk management program and evaluate the credit quality of a bank’s investment portfolio. Specific content addressed in the Securities module includes
- Components of an adequate investment risk management program
- Characteristics and risks associated with permissible bank investment instruments
- Investment portfolio accounting and reconciliation
- Investment portfolio credit risk analysis
